Day 14 Leaving Houston
Terrible night of sleeping and snoozing, then woken at 5 because the next door neighbours were
leaving.
After breakfast started packing. I had parcels to send back
and needed to go to the post office. A different manager told me about a much
closer one. Still hard to find and still expensive. While I was there I met
Karen Styles and her husband sending off supplies for a customer.
Back to the hotel to finish packing and make my lunch. I had
a cup of tea in the foyer then caught an Uber to the airport.
I’d done my check in on line last night- tricky when the
computer you are using has no @ key! Made “send to my email address” slightly
impossible. A United airline lady helped me with the bag tag. Then checked the
bag in, 45 lbs. Internal flights have only one bag allowed (and you still have
to pay for the privilege. Up to 50lbs is $25. If the bag weighs more than 50 lbs you pay
$125 !
Through security with no issues- caught the monorail to
terminal C to wait for my flight. I got a cup of reasonable tea and ate my
lunch watching a Hugh Lawrie look alike. Finally called to go through to the
gates. Only to walk along the corridor to the most distant gate and be told “go
back, we don’t have a crew yet!” Me and another guy just walked back a few
yards and sat and waited. Eventually a crew was “found” We boarded and because
I was in the last row and there was no room in the overhead lockers, my bag
went under the seat.
A sign at the airport- hardly appropriate. |
A two hour flight but the sun was setting when we landed.
What I didn’t know was I had to turn my watch forward one hour. Picked up my
bag on the carrousel and waited for the Uber driver. He took only 9 minutes and
we needed a few calls for him to work out where I was. No point asking me? I
had no idea and just had to tell him what signs I could see around me.
He dropped me off at the Planter’s Inn at Reynolds Square. A
gorgeous historic building right in the middle of historic buildings. Dumped my
bags and went to find some dinner. GOOD LUCK. Every place I tried had a waiting
list of at least 30 minutes. So I finally gave up and put my name down at Vic’s
in the river area and then walked around to fill in the time.
Issue in Savannah: Very uneven pavements and poor lighting
in some areas. I moved out of the way on the path for some other people and
sure enough twisted my left ankle. Didn’t appear to be much damage other than a
bit sore at the time.
I took photos as I walked along. The river front was just
beautiful. The reflections were lovely.
Back up the path to the restaurant. The BEST brisket ever,
GF, but a huge serving and I struggled to get through it all. Then I walked
back, had a quick shower and bed at last. I needed a ladder to get up but once
there it was a very quick time to the land of nod.
