Day 12 Aplington to Manasquan New Jersey.

Not much sleep again last night. I didn’t finish uploading until late and then tossed and turned for hours snoozing on and off. Up at 7:30. Checked weather and flights- all good. Finished last minute packing then breakfast. We took some photos before we left at 9:30 for the airport. The skies were blue as far as you could see but as we got closer to the airport at Cedar Rapids the clouds were building.
Cedar Rapids airport

Gordon and Brenda dropped me off and we intended having a drink together, before they set off for his parents. I was slightly confused by the bag signage and was standing in the wrong queue until Brenda told me and I moved. Fast check-in, where they reissued the boarding passes (so much for printing them off) and the plane was on time.
While I was standing in the queue for a tea, they called the flight for Newark. I was confused that the call was so early. Should have checked my ticket but we said our good byes and off I went through security, up to the second floor to find that it was another flight that was being called. Ah well time for a tea. Great WiFi connection, so I downloaded the photos I had taken this morning and spent time cropping and deleting. Finally time to board another small plane. It was only a 46 minute flight to Chicago, despite what it said on the ticket. What they meant to say 46 minutes in the air and the rest of the time on the tarmac waiting for a place to de-plane.
The man next to me worked for the Quaker company. So I had a long chat about his company and oats- apparently naturally GF, BUT usually contaminated with either barley or wheat. So it has to be especially processed to remove all contaminants to be GF. They have one plant in Perth! The oats are now grown in Canada and processed in Cedar Rapids. The company is now owned by Pepsi.
Once again I was telling him all about Australia. Not to self. Bring along that postcard of Australia and the comparison with the USA. I’m sure I should be getting a subsidy from the Australian Government for promoting the place?
Lake Michigan

Fantastic photos of Lake Michigan as we came into Chicago. We landed, but had to wait to get a gate. Only took 10 minutes then we rolled into Terminal 2. But then there was no notice of our connecting flight. Off to the Inquiry counter to be told we had to catch the bus to Terminal C. That was efficiently done, but you definitely would not like to have a tight connection. Lots of steps too.
When we got there I stopped at McDonalds for some fries (2:30) and a cup of tea. Arriving at the gate to hear what I didn’t want to hear. A delayed flight. So instead of leaving at 3:55 now leaving at 5. At least it is the same gate. (fingers crossed) So the next issue was to notify Charles in Newark. I could not believe that Chicago does NOT have a secure WiFi connection and my computer refused to connect to any site available. LUCKY I had transferred their details into my phone, so I rang Charles and told them of the change.
Then I sat down to type up today’s adventures along with all the other customers. A few on their phones, some staring out into space, Some catching a few minutes of sleep, a few lined up – desperate to make upcoming connections and outside this waiting section people running past or strolling past in the busy airport. Only one whole hour to go. Looks like I will catch up on a few more chapters of my E-book……

Finally boarded at 4:45 to wait on the tarmac for a while until we took off slightly after 5:10. Got some photos because I was near the window again but it was much cloudier. Before Newark the clouds got thicker, Fabulous sunset above the clouds, where at one stage I had three images of the sun reflected in the clouds.
Descended in rain and only caught brief glimpses of the city and the lights. Stopped to visit the bathroom before I went down to baggage claim. Charles and Christa were waiting for me at the carousel and surprise – my bag was not last out. Dark by now. (8:20pm) We made our way down the freeways to their home in Manasquan, where I was warmly welcomed. My bedroom was on the second floor, so Charles had to lug the case up there. Christa had been shopping for every gluten and lactose free item she could find. So I had a delicious home grown tomato sandwich, cup of tea and fruit. I took a very quick shower before falling into bed at 11 after a few emails re arrival and was fast asleep in seconds.
