Heather had a crook tummy, so she missed breakfast. The same
buffet you would find in any hotel we have seen, except here they had a hot
water urn that had never contained coffee (something most hotels do not
realise) and tea bags. Again the cats were prowling. Currently trying to blog with a kitten trying to destroy my cords, computer bag and now my tissue.

Back in the room to tidy up and then out early to meet the
bus, only to find the bus was there! In we got for a walking tour of Trinidad.
First stop the potter’s. Some lovely wind chimes- just too big to take home.
Great pots and figurines, but again weight and bag space.
Cobblestone roads |
local transport not just a tourist thing. |
Next stop: a walking
tour of the old area now protected by UNESCO. The roads were paved with
cobblestones made from ship’s ballast. Then onto the museum of architecture.
Once a home for a rich sugar owner. That is where my tummy decided “my time”.
This area had master craftsmen using the mahogany and cedar! Then it was time
to go into the cathedral. Beautiful carved wooden altars. It includes the cross
that was destined for Mexico, but was left here after the ship had two
encounters with hurricanes. The old Franciscan convent, houses information
about the local people killed by Battista, especially all the teachers trying
to teach the peasants to read and write. They have a CIA boat that used sonar
and machine guns to destroy the fishing boats- to create a loss of economy! A
military truck used at the Bay of Pigs. We paid extra to climb up to the bell
tower. Relatively easy climb, but I nearly had heart failure at the second last
level when suddenly the floor boards above started to bend under the weight of
all the people up there and debris came down from above. One board was flexing
by four inches!!! I just took my pictures and got down quickly.
Inside the Franciscan convent. |
Back to the square to get a drink for Heather. A combination
of her tummy and hot weather was taking a bit of a toll. Walking through the
shops and stalls we were constantly met by beggars who weren’t even pretending
to sell you anything. Lucky my travelling bear was attached as he was grabbed a
few times. Several people were trying to swap fake notes and coins for real
ones, but most were just stall holders trying to seel products. There were some
beautiful sewn clothes. But if you stopped- it was sold. A quick stop at a bar
for a local sugar drink, but I just took photos. There was a Sammy Davis look
alike there. Boy could he move, but once again for money. Onto our lunch stop.
Great band, great food. I had the fish – again delicious and a baked cheesecake
for dessert. Poor Heather just nibbled on a bread stick. Once again flies to
complete the meal.
After lunch back on the bus and returned to our hotels for a
quiet afternoon, before dinner tonight. Just what we both needed. I downloaded
photos and wrote up today and Heather had a sleep.
